How to show up in ChatGPT and Google AI

A plain-English guide to getting your business named in AI answers, and what no one can promise.

Asking AI for a recommendation has gone mainstream. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 45% of US consumers said they'd used AI tools for local business recommendations in the past year, up from 6% the year before (BrightLocal). Here is what helps your business get named.

Make your facts easy to read

AI tools pull from your website, your business profiles and what others say about you. Say plainly what you do, who you serve and where. Add structured data (schema.org markup) so machines can read your name, services, service area and hours without guessing.

Answer real questions

Write short, direct answers to the questions customers actually ask, like how much a job costs, how long it takes and whether you serve their town. One or two clear sentences per answer is the format AI tools quote most easily.

Be consistent everywhere

Your business name, phone number and services should match on your site, Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and your social profiles. Mismatches make AI tools less confident about recommending you.

Let AI crawlers in

Check that your robots.txt file doesn't block crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. Adding a short llms.txt file that summarizes your site is a small extra step.

Earn reviews and mentions

Reviews, local news, directories and industry sites are all places AI tools learn about you. Steady, genuine reviews matter here too.

The honest part

No one can guarantee what an AI assistant will say, and you should be wary of anyone who promises it. What you can do is be the clearest, most consistent and best-documented option, and track the results over time.
